Coded Arms

Review by theblueottsel

"Not as good as I thought it would be..."

Man...When I saw the cover of this game, I was thinking it would be something like Killzone. Boy, was I wrong. Oh well, here is my review. Enjoy.

Story-Well, there really is no story, and that is the main reason this game got a 6. I can't stand games that have no story. Really, the only story in the entire game is in the instruction book. Sometime far into the future there exists some kind of virtual reallity thing. A cyberworld. But something has gone terribly wrong. Viruses are taking over it, and the whole system has gone out of control. So you play a nameless hacker that must infiltrate the system's core and delete the virus. And that is all there is to the story. Really.

Gameplay-Well, here is where the game shines, sorta. To it's credit, this game has a LOT of action. Almost every room in every level is packed with enemies, or "Viruses". You have 30 different weapons to use, and I found that pretty awsome. They range from simple pistols to RPGs. So you have a very nice arsenal, and this is good. Now, you are in a computer cyberworld, so you must think of the enemies as "Bugs and Viruses" And the bugs really look like bugs. Really, there are only 3 types of enemies. 1 is the bugs, which I just told you about. 2 is the cyberworld's security forces, who for some reason have turned evil. They look just like human soldiers, and some can be very annoying, because they have rocket launchers and flame grenades and stuff. The 3rd type of enemy is the MASSIVE bosses. Really, there is this one boss that towers over 200 feet. Another cool thing is that all bosses have parts you can attack. They all have 1 or 2 weak points on them, but you can blow off their weapons, and other stuff to make the fights easier. Well, that is pretty much all the good stuff. Now for the bad. All the levels in this game are very linear. Also, it is very repetitve. All you really do is run through identical rooms killing off tons if identical enemies. It is fun at first, but after doing this about 10 times, you start wanting more variety. And the controls for this game are very hard. Sice the PSP only has 1 joystick, and you use it to move, you actually have to use the Circle, Square, Triangle, and X buttons to aim up, down, left, and right. I found this very hard. Fortunatly you can change the controls. I suggest using type 2, it makes it a bit easier. And also, this game has a sky-high difficulty. There are no check points in levels, so it can get really annoying. And in some levels, you are on a 3 minute time limit. This isn't really a problem, though. Lastly, this game is FAR too short. If you don't die too much, you can probably beat it in a day. Fortunatly, there is a mode called Infinity where the game seems to go on forever.

Well, all-in-all this is a fairly fun FPS for the PSP.
