Me and My Katamari
Review by Y2JkicksRVD
"I see only one fault with this game…"
That being, the creators don't know proper English! We all know it should be My Katamari and I. Oh well, considering that the creators of this game are Japanese, we shall forgive them.
The PSP has gone through a period of criticisms for not having any good games. First off, the PSP had great games from launch. For the doubters, check this list. Metal Gear: Acid, Prince of Persia, Tokobot, and PoPoLoCrois. Now, you doubters finally need to shut up. With the release of this game, the PSP has reached an entirely new level. We can now finally play the greatness of Katamari on the go. Indeed, this game is great, and indeed, you should buy it.
Graphics--10/10
This game features some of the best graphics on PSP. It is in a tie for first, along with GTA: LCS, and Tokobot. The graphics easily rival the Playstation 2 counterparts. It doesn't lose anything either. The King of Cosmos looks the same, the Prince and his cousins also look the same. The comic feel of the game is still present. The colors are vibrant, everything is rendered smoothly. It is hard for me to express how good the graphics really are. Just
try it. You will see all that I cannot express with words. This category easily earns a perfect score.
Sound/Music--10/10
If you have played any previous Katamari title, then you know just how great the music and sound is. With a soundtrack like no other, the Music is outstanding. Ranging from weird Japanese techno, to that of the great Frank Sinatra, anyone will love it. The perfect blend of greatness. The sound effects are also good. With the distinguished voice of the King of all Cosmos returning, everything is as it should be. There is also the funny sounds of rolling up humans, chickens, and numerous other objects. With music like no other game, this category easily gets a 10 out of 10.
Controls--10/10
First off, the controls are not that different from the PS2 versions. Some critics, will bash the new scheme without trying it. Those people do not know anything. As you know, the PSP has no Dual-Shock control sticks, so there had to be something done. So, the D-Pad and Four buttons are substituted in. It takes some getting used to, but once you have it down, you should be fine. The controls are not bad at all. When it's all said and done, the controls are actually quite good. 10 out of 10.
Gameplay--10/10
On the outside, it may look like all you are doing is rolling a big ball, collecting anything and everything you can. To be completely honest, that is all you are doing. But you must do it in different situations. There is a time limit, and some missions require you to complete certain situations. The story does not really matter, but it has a uniqueness to it. It only adds to the game. The game also features some multi-player modes. Those also help, because you can roll balls cooperatively. It's a dream come true! The unique type of game that Katamari is, allows for nothing more than a 10 out of 10.
Replayability--10/10
It may seem like this game would get old quickly, but it is just the opposite. This game never gets old. Who could get bored of rolling up Sumo wrestlers? Only someone without an imagination, that's who. With so much to unlock, and the ability to play levels from the PS2 versions, and not to mention the multi-player, there is so much to do in this game that your head will spin. When I got this game, it was as if nothing else mattered. It was as if time stopped. I wish it had. I got the game, put it in, started playing. 3 days later, the phone rings, it is my boss, he is pissed. I am now suspended from work for a week. Hey, that's more time for Katamari! Easily, this game gets a 10 for Replayability.
So, for those of you waiting for a good game get this one. The only bad thing is, if you live in America, you will have to import. That is until around March. The game is currently out only in Japan. But, there is no region code on the PSP, so I seriously suggest you importing this game. The story doesn't really matter, so it doesn't have to be an English version.
Now, if you'll excuse me, the Prince is awaiting, not to mention some Swiss Cake Rolls.
