Burnout Legends

Review by Merkaba

"Faster than a speeding bullet"

The roller-coaster ride that is Burnout has finally arrived on PSP and there is still no better feeling than boosting through seemingly impossible gaps and into oncoming traffic.

GAMEPLAY
Burnout Legends is a compendium of all the Burnout games up to and including Burnout 3 so the majority of modes from all three games are present. Pursuit, race, eliminator, road rage and crash are all there as well as numerous others. The joy that is the World Tour forms the bulk of single player gaming. Based on a similar principle to Burnout 3 you can choose from a selection of events from around the world in one of several classes. The better you race the more races and cars are made available to you. Such a simple framework lets you jump into races quickly, just what the PSP was meant for. The gameplay hasn't been pared down from that of its bigger sibling. All the thrills of driving dangerously to gain boost are still as exhilarating as ever. The only flat tire is that some of the earlier tracks don't quite make the grade when it comes to driving fast and they actually require you to drive more carefully, something that's quite unexpected in the Burnout universe.

SOUND
Burnout Legends gives you a mini version of tracks culled from Revenge, so you can expect the usual array of punk and rock tracks. Unfortunately the engine sounds are weedy and give you no sense of power. Otherwise there's really nothing to write home about.

GRAPHICS
Graphically Burnout Legends is a cut above the rest with only the odd slow down on more crowded stages spoiling things. The cars all look quite good and the stages only look bad if you stare really closely at them, something not all that common when racing as any Burnout fan knows. Menus and so on are almost taken directly from Burnout so if you've seen them then you know what to expect.

REPLAYABILITY
The world tour lasts quite long when played in short burst and wi-fi is made all the more appealing by having special cars as prizes. The ability to share a level with a friend who doesn't own a copy of the game is also very welcome.

RECOMMENDATION
Certainly one of the first good batch of racers for the PSP you can rest assured that this will make a fine addition to your copy of Ridge Racer.
