X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse
Review by The Frivolous 1
"What ports of games should be"
X-men Legends was one of the best co-op games of the year. And when Patrick Stewart said it you couldn't disagree. The sequel to that awesome game was a big upgrade and just as much fun. Then it was ported over to the PSP .now the PSP has had full ports of games, but they are normally marred by problems, however not only does the PSP version of X-men Legends 2 capture the whole game it even throws in 4 new characters and 9 sizable comic book missions, and for the excellence of the port itself I can't help but to give this game a high score.
Gameplay: The gameplay is very simplistic, but in that oh so fun way. Get an objective, hit some switched, smash everything around, win. The thing that makes this so fun is mostly the wonton destruction you can cause mixed in with joy of playing as a Marvel character for fans, although co-op can be enjoyed by everyone who likes games along the ilk of Gauntlet. The loading times aren't that bad when compared to other ports, and its toll on the battery life isn't above average. You could squeeze out around 4-5 hours.
Sound: The sound is taken right from the console versions, every voice over, song, sound effect is in this. There is a second delay when loading an ingame VO, but that's about as much a problem you'll have with the sound. All the effects you'd hear when you throw someone through a wall and into a statue are all there and on cue.
Controls: The controls were one thing I was the most worried about, but thankfully they come out well. Those who are used to playing the console version may take a few minuets to adjust but it works well anyway. The only thing the PSP's lack of buttons and sticks hurts is camera control. You can't move the camera around ingame, you can set how far away it is from you in the options menu, but that's about it. The good thing is that the camera never really because a problem, it's just a feature that you sort of like to have around.
Graphics: They are half-a-step down from the console version, but 2 steps up from the first game on the PS2. All the CG cuts in the game are just the same as the consoles as well.
In the end: I have to give this game a 10, it's a game that is really enjoyable, now portable and not only portable with extra content, and the super quality of the port alone in my eyes makes this game a 10.
