Jump Ultimate Stars
Review by swimmering
"Oh my goodness. It has arrived."
Now I will be reviewing Jump! Ultimate Stars for the Nintendo DS.
Story: Varies
I couldn't really tell what the story was about, though it might have been because I don't know what the heck they were talking about. Though it seems like a nice follow-up to its predecessor, Jump! Super Stars.
Graphics: 8/10
It was a nice semi-sidescroller. It looked pretty good, even it it was 2D.
And some of the attacks you can pull off look pretty spectacular. The courses look alright, not as pretty as I would have hoped, but not bad overall.
Single-Player Game play: 8.5/10
The training was killer. I just started mashing buttons until I got things right. It was pretty irritating. But the battles between me and a CPU were good. The CPUs were slightly challenging, or maybe that's just me. Though the only reason I actually play the main game is to unlock characters. For those of you who don't know, this game is pretty much a DS Super Smash Bros., but with far more characters and (to my belief) less stages to battle on.
Multi-Player/Wi-fi Game play: 10/10
Wow. This game over Wi-fi is amazing. The people you face are usually insane (as in good), but the battles are definitely worthwhile. This is probably all I do with this game.
Options: 11/10
Now, I may be wrong about this (which I doubt because I looked this up on Wikipedia), but I heard there are over 300 characters available for play. Yes. Over 300. Now there's about 6 - maybe more - moves per character. So 300 X 6 is... Anyone? Nobody? Just me? Alright. It equals 1,800. That's about how many moves you have in that game (I could be off by a few hundred). That's quite a bit. Now, those of you who played the Jump! Super Stars, you would be familiar with the whole "deck" thing on the bottom screen. Those of you who don't know, you have pictures of characters on the bottom screen so you can flip through characters mid-flight. You can also use special attacks with this "deck." In this installment of the Jump! Stars series, you can make your own "decks." That means YOU get to choose the characters you have in Wi-fi battles (not sure about single-/multi-card play). Very nice feature!
Music: 6/10
It might be great for someone, but not me. It was just too....dare I say it... Japanese! I don't even know what to say about it now.
Overall: 9/10
This game is really quite something, and it is not to be overlooked! If you liked Super Smash Bros, you will (at least) tolerate this game. I honestly don't know how you could dislike this game. The characters may all be anime/manga characters (like Naruto), but I still loved it. I hate anime/manga (especially Naruto), yet Naruto is one of my favorite characters. GO BUY THIS GAME!
