Alien Hominid
Review by Setnaro X
"Those FBIs Forgot to Keep This Game Under Wraps"
Alien Hominid is the kind of game that, if you're not careful, could pass by you, and you'll be missing out on a lot of fun. Based on the flash game with the same name, it's now out for the GCN and the PS2, and here is my review.
For gameplay, you control a little yellow alien with his gun, while being chased by the FBI, so it's only natural that you'll have to shoot them down along your way. At first, you have a gun that shoots generic bullets, or you can charge it and blast a big one that can stand at its own. As you progress, you'll be able to increase the strength of your gun for a limited time with special power-ups ranging from fire bullets to ice bullets. Along with your gun, you also carry grenades that can create massive explosions for a more killing spree. For up close combat, you can also use a sword that can slice up an enemy right in half. In the options, you can change the look of your little alien by making him wear the hats that you unlock in story mode. There are a lot to choose from. You can play by yourself, or with a friend. Along with story mode, you can also play some mini games as well as a PDA game system that brings hundreds of puzzles for up to 4 players. Cool!
The controls for Alien Hominid feel almost the same as the original flash version. You can jump, shoot, jump and shoot. For the console version, you can now dig underground, ride vehicles, roll around, and pick up your enemies after piggyback-riding them and throw them. The controls are very tight with all the fast and heavy actions going on.
I can't say anything about the graphics, since the game is all hand-drawn. What I CAN say is that the artworks are superb. The game, while its very actionitive and violent, it does a good job looking cartoonish. All the artworks are cool from the menu, to the stages, and the characters themselves. Each has a look and attitude that fits them. I knew the artist enjoys poking fun at the FBI just by looking at the way they animated them. And since this game came from the flash world, the console version retains the look and feel of what the original looked like, even in the cutscenes, which is awesome.
The sounds are pretty decent. The sound effects of the game are actually the same ones from the Flash game, so not much there. The music is cool too, but they're just so short, so they start to get repetitive. The music, since the game is cartoonish, happens to also be cartoonish sometimes.
Alien Hominid is definitely the game that most GCN and PS2 owners should. With the story mode for 1 or 2 players, and the mini games for up to 4, and those hats to unlock, and with the humor it has, it can definitely keep a gamer entertained.
Gameplay: 10/10 (So much kablooeys going on, it's just so hard to keep the control away.)
Control: 8/10 (Tight. So many things that yellow E.T. can do.)
Graphics: 9/10 (Graphics meaning artworks, which are impressive. Retaining the Flash game too.)
Sounds: 7/10 (The sound F/X are cool. Using the same ones from the Flash. It's the music that tends to get annoying.)
Go out and get it now!
