1) INTRODUCTION
******************************************************************************
Doubutsu no Mori + (DnM+), or Animal Forest +, was released by Nintendo for
Nintendo GameCube (GCN) in Japan on December 14, 2001, nine months before the
release of Animal Crossing (AC) in North America.

This guide assumes that the player is familiar with Animal Crossing, and
concentrates on things that are different in DnM+ when compared to AC.

Much of the DnM+ gameplay is the same as that in AC.

******************************************************************************
2) TECHNICAL GAMEPLAY
******************************************************************************
Doubutsu no Mori + was manufactured to play in a Japanese Nintendo GameCube.
It cannot function in a non-Japanese GCN without the assistance of additional
software, such as FreeLoader.

The game also uses Japanese file-saving protocols when saving to a memory card.
Japanese and North American GCN game files cannot be saved on the same memory
card.

******************************************************************************
3) LANGUAGE
******************************************************************************
This game uses the Japanese language and has little use of English. Written
Japanese makes use of three main syllabaries: kanji, hiragana, and katakana.
(A syllabary is a writing system where symbols represent syllables.)

Kanji refers to Chinese characters used in written Japanese. School children
are taught the 1,945 regular kanji (identified by a 1981 governmental decree)
used in "official" communications (there are thousands of other kanji in use).

In children's video games, texts are often written entirely in hiragana and/or
katakana.

Hiragana, meaning "ordinary syllabic script," consists of 48 syllables. It is
mainly used to write word endings, but is widely used in materials for children.
Hiragana symbols appear flowing or "feminine."

Katakana, meaning "part (of kanji) syllabic script," also consists of 48
syllables. It has various uses, including foreign words and emphasis (like
bold or italics in English). Katakana symbols appear angular or "masculine."

Romaji refers to the system where written Japanese is represented by the Latin
(or English) alphabet.

This guide uses romaji versions of Japanese names used in the game. The
corresponding Animal Crossing names are included in brackets. The author
apologizes for mistakes in translation.

******************************************************************************
4) DIALS
******************************************************************************
Instead of a "qwerty" keyboard, Doubutsu no Mori + uses "dials" for typing.

You select a collection of dials by pushing the "Y" button. They are:
1) Hiragana
2) Punctuation
3) Katakana
4) Latin alphabet (English letters)
5) Numbers

In each collection, you flick the analog stick down to obtain more choices.

The hiragana and katakana dials first show five symbols, arranged in a blue
semi-circle around the analog stick, clockwise from left to right. As you
point the analog stick toward each of the five, you will see five symbols
appear in a red semi-circle. To choose a written symbol, you:
1) Point the analog stick toward one of the blue symbols
2) Press the "A" button
3) Point the analog stick toward one of the red symbols
4) Press the "A" button
5) Press the "X" button to modify the symbol, if desired

The red semi-circles display the symbols in the customary Japanese vowel order
of "a," "i," "u," "e," and "o," clockwise from left to right. The blue semi-
circles show the "a" sound using different consonants. For example, from the
default hiragana position, if you point your analog stick up towards what looks
like a backwards "5," you will see the syllables "sa," "shi," "su," "se," and
"so" appear in the red semi-circle. The modifications either reduce the size
of the symbol (for various purposes) or add diacritical marks (known as dakuten
and handakuten) that change the syllable's consonant.

The consonant order from the default position is:
1) a (i u e o)
2) ka (ki ku ke ko) (": ga gi gu ge go)
3) sa (shi su se so) (": za ji zu ze zo)
4) ta (chi tsu te to) (": da ji zu de do)
5) na (ni nu ne no)
6) ha (hi fu he ho) (": ba bi bu be bo) (circle: pa pi pu pe po)
7) ma (mi mu me mo)
8) ya (yu yo - ~)
9) ra (ri ru re ro)
10) wa (wo n , .)

The hiragana for "so" and "ri" on the DnM+ dials may be different from what
appears in other sources, such as DnM+ e-Reader cards.

In the other collections, make a choice by:
1) Pointing the analog stick toward one of the blue symbols
2) Pressing the "A" button
3) Pressing the "X" button to modify, if desired

Press the "B" button to backspace or delete.

Use the cross pad to move the cursor.
Press right on the cross pad to made a space.
Press down on the cross pad to make the end-of-line/return symbol.

Press the "Start/Pause" button when finished.

******************************************************************************
5) MOVING
******************************************************************************
You could move your Doubutsu no Mori (N64 game) player to DnM+! Up until
January 10, 2002, for a fee of 630 yen plus postage, you could send your N64
controller pack, with Doubutsu no Mori game data, and a 59-block GCN memory
card to Nintendo and get, in return, a Doubutsu no Mori + game file on the
memory card with your DnM character "moved" to a new DnM+ village. As a bonus,
the new player received Ice Climber.  Most of the player's catalog transferred;
some of the items possibly lost included the I Love 64 Shirt, the N Logo Shirt,
the Dreadful Painting (Edvard Munch's "Scream"), and the Novel Painting (Piet
Mondrian's "Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue"). Also, the player's fish
and insect inventories transferred.

Similarly, you can move your DnM+ player to DnMe+! This page appears to be
describing how: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ngc/gaej/moving/index.html. More
information is contained in the Doubutsu no Mori e+ FAQ:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/game/918692.html.

7) THE UNKNOWN CAT
******************************************************************************
If you are moving into a village, you will meet [Rover] Mishiranuneko (or
Unknown Cat). You have only six spaces for your character and town names.

Just as in Animal Crossing, your responses to [Rover's] Mishiranuneko's
questions will determine your player's sex (number 4) and face design (numbers
2, 6, 7, and 8). To refresh your memory, here are his questions:

1) Is the time correct? (if you are the first to move into your village)

******************************************************************************
8) TANUKICHI'S TASKS
******************************************************************************
Just as in Animal Crossing, [Tom Nook] Tanukichi takes a break between tasks in
order to finish preparing a package. He asks you to possibly do favors for
villagers.

To refresh your memory, here is the task list:
1) Change into your uniform
2) Plant flowers and trees
3) Meet villagers (six in a new village) and [Tortimer] Kotobuki
4) Deliver a piece of furniture
5) Write and mail a letter (it doesn't matter what you write)
   (break)
6) Deliver carpeting
7) Deliver an Axe to the recipient of the letter
8) Write an ad on the [Bulletin Board] Keijiban (again, it doesn't matter what
you write)

******************************************************************************
9) AROUND THE TOWN
******************************************************************************
Instead of a Wishing Well, Doubutsu no Mori + has the [Shrine] Oyashiro. It
has a unique icon on your town map.

Another location with a different map icon is the [Post Office] Yuubin kyoku.
Its icon is katakana "te," short for tegami, or letter. (It's also the logo
used by Japan POST, the Japanese postal service.) There is no ETM in the [Post
Office] Yuubin kyoku.

Several of the locations have signage in Japanese and were redesigned for
Animal Crossing.

A couple of the locations around town have different menu options:

At [Tom Nook's] Tanukichi's:
1) I'd like to sell
2) See my catalog
3) Turnip prices?
4) Never mind
(Notice that there are no options for codes.)

At the [Tailor] Shitateya:
1) Design a pattern
...a. Do you wish to pay 980 bells?
......i. Yes
......ii. Never mind
...b. Anything else?

3) Any suggestions?
4) Nothing . . .

Others are the same as in Animal Crossing:

At your [Gyroid] Haniwa-kun:
1) Save
...a. Would you like to save?
......i. That's right!
......ii. Umm, hang on!
2) Store an item
3) Other Things
...a. About the Door

4) Nothing ...

At the [Police Station] Kouban:
1) Any goings-on?

3) What's this?
4) Nothing . . .

At the [Museum] Hakubutsukan:
1) Donate an item
2) What's this?
3) Nope, nothing!

The [Town Melody Board] Mero keijiban uses katakana to represent musical notes.
Here is the scale from lowest note to highest note:

[G A B C D E F G A B C D E]
so ra shi do re mi fa so ra shi do re mi

******************************************************************************
10) HOUSE UPGRADES
******************************************************************************
Your debts to [Tom Nook] Tanukichi are the same as in Animal Crossing:

2) 148,000 bells for the first expansion
3) 398,000 bells for the second expansion, or
4) 49,800 bells for a basement (second choice at [Tom Nook's] Tanukichi's)
5) 798,000 bells for a second floor

When [Tom Nook] Tanukichi asks what roof color you want, remember that he
offers three colors at a time in the order of red, orange, yellow; light green,
green, light blue; blue, purple, pink; black, white, brown.

******************************************************************************

12) VILLAGER PERSONALITIES
******************************************************************************
There are six different personalities in the game:

Males:
...A) [Cranky] Ore awake 10:00am to 5:00am
...B) [Jock] Oira awake 5:30am to 1:00am
...C) [Lazy] Boku awake 8:00am to 10:00pm

Females:
...D) [Snooty] Atashi awake 9:00am to 2:30am
...E) [Peppy] Atai awake 7:00am to 11:30pm
...F) [Normal] Watashi awake 5:00am to 9:00pm

From Nakor:

"They're all different ways of saying I or "me," but each has a different tone.

"Watashi" is the most standard one, thus going to the normal type.
"Atashi" is a feminine variation of Watashi.
"Atai" is to my understanding a really slangy Watashi.
"Boku" is a casual word for I or me that's used primarily between male "pals"
       or friends.
"Ore" is a sort of self-confident, bragging way of saying I.
"Oira" is a slightly slangy variation of Ore, unless I'm mistaken on this one.

Thus they can be used to differentiate between the different personalities."

Here are the 218 DnM+ animal personalities, using AC names:

13) VILLAGER INTERACTIONS
******************************************************************************
When speaking to villagers, the initial three options are the same as in Animal
Crossing (i.e., Any work?; What's up?; Never mind). Much of the conversation
and interactions are also the same.

There are several different "visual emotions" for the animals. A red "X"
appears when an animal is initially angry. Curling black smoke clouds,
somewhat like those in Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker, appear when animals are
sad. A spinning coil, in the shape of a cone, appears when an animal is
confused. Both vertical and horizontal lines with a blue-cloud background can
appear.

23) PASSWORDS
******************************************************************************
You cannot "say" or "hear" codes at [Tom Nook's] Tanukichi's, so the only way
to use passwords is by sending them in letters to villagers.

When sending passwords in letters to villagers, follow these steps:
1) Send no more than five passwords each day.
2) Each day, send each password to a different villager.
3) All text is hiragana.
4) End each line with a end-of-line/return symbol.
5) Enter "a i ko to ba" on the first line.
6) Enter the password on the second and third lines.

Following are passwords, in catalog order, obtained from e-Reader cards and
from a Japanese forum (http://www12.ocn.ne.jp/~animal/). The author has
verified that all these passwords work.

If the password came from a DnM+ character card, the card number and the animal,
using their AC name, are identified. If the identified animal is living in
your town, you may receive a [NES] Famicom game attached to the reply,
regardless of whether you addressed the password to the specific animal.
