Dreamcast

Review by Cyber-Sushi

"Rest in peace, mighty Dreamcast."

All the way back to the Master System and Genesis. I'll be completely honest - I was so extremely biased back then I'd spit on myself if I could go into the past. I had this implanted into my mind ''Sega bad, Nintendo good'' and it stuck with me for a quite a long time. I missed out on some real gems (besides the few games my cousin had for Genesis) but that doesn't mean I've changed it to ''Sega good, Nintendo bad'' I've changed it to ''Keep an open mind.'' When I made the decision to rent a Dreamcast, I was very proud of myself. I had finllay matured, and who could blame a guy for wanting some variety? The cutesy stuff of the N64 is OK with me, but sometimes you just have to have something more realistic.
On September 9th, 1999, I couldn't have cared less for Sega. I just couldn't seem to trust them after Saturn and lack of support for Game Gear. So I let all the news and everyone's thoughts pass me by. I didn't want to hear anything about it. But eventually I saw the big picture, and realized that games are games. The Dreamcast looked like a great system, why not at least try it out?

So I picked up the Dreamcast at my local blockbuster and brought it home with Soul Calibur and Crazy Taxi. These two games alone changed my view on gaming forever. I saw the amazing fighting engine and beauty of soul calibur which IMHO is the best 3D fighter around, and then there's Crazy Taxi. It's simply fun, no matter how you look at it. It's definitly a game that anyone of any age can enjoy. After renting it, I had finally gained a respect for Sega. And it was a deep respect that Sega earned. The system looks great, I can sit and stare at it all day because it just looks so slick. The Dreamcast brought so many new things to the gaming world.

I also started keeping an eye open for any DC news, and became more and more interested in its games. So I made the big decision : I was going to buy a Dreamcast. I worked hard for days to get enough money for a DC and Chu Chu Rocket (It was cheap, and it looked great). I will never regret that day. Never. I play Chu Chu on a daily basis, with my friends, with people over the net and alone to challenge my brain in puzzle mode.

The Dreamcast itself is a masterpiece, but there is always a fault. You have to think about the competition. Will you still want to play the DC once you have a PS2, Gamecube, or Xbox at your service? Maybe yes, maybe no. Video games aren't all about technology, even though that's important. It's about the games! DC has them for ya, and you can pick it up cheap nowadays.

I love my Dreamcast and everything about it. And it'll go down into the hall of fame along with NES, SNES, and N64. It'll be in there for sure. Sega may have pulled the plug, but the games are there, slowing down to a trickle maybe, but they're still there. The PS2 may be owning now, and the Cube and Xbox may be on their way, and the Dreamcast; slowly making its way into the grave still provides you with wonderful experiences. The price is so low now, there's no reason why you shouldn't own one.

Some mentionable titles...
Sonic Adventure series
House of the Dead 2
Soul Calibur
Dead or Alive 2
Crazy Taxi series
Resident Evil : Code Veronica
Chu Chu Rocket
Jet Grind Radio
Shenmue
Phantasy Star Online
Grandia II

And much much more. See what the Dreamcast has to offer for you and you won't be disappointed. Just don't have a biased attitude like I did - you'll be missing out.
